Becoming the Master of Ceremonies

Have a look at just what it takes for this senior Theatre major to materialize one the most most iconic roles in history.

Teddy Dallam wowed audiences night after night with a rousing performance as the provocative and awe-inspiring Master of Ceremonies of the Kit Kat Club in Cabaret. But the process of bringing to life such a spell-binding character was one of raw talent and ground breaking character development. Below is a Q+A with Teddy Dallam, giving us just a hint of how he brought the infamous MC to life.

How would you describe the MC? Do you identify with him in any way?

"The MC is a force. He lives in his purpose. He recognizes that the world has a tendency to lean toward what is entertaining and comfortable. In the Berlin era, he sees an opportunity to show people from the current era what societal ignorance leads to. I agree with him in the sense that people should be aware, but I don't think I share his strong ties to cynicism."

How did your portrayal of the MC grow from the beginning of rehearsals to closing night? What do you believe the MC is trying to communicate to the audience?

"At the beginning of the rehearsal period, I focused on the hunger that the MC possessed. He is an extremely driven character that can get aggressive at times. The balance of the role became knowing when to give and take between the influencing of the audience. I have to entertain them, then show them how easy it is to get distracted, but still be likable enough to pull them back in. The MC is trying to show the harshness of reality. His thesis is that love can't win in a cruel world where power is the main prize and men will do anything to get it. "

What surprised you about your process? If you could do something differently with your performance, what would that be?

"I was surprised how strongly I could sink into his raw passion. He let me explore my ability to just let go and be raw as an artist.

I would further strengthen the bond between the kit Kat klub and the MC. I see the Kit Kat Klub as an extension of the MC's power."

Describe your interpretation of the final scene.

"The final scene, to me, is the effects of a culture that lets evil be trivialized. It's showing that the most victimized in humanity are the ones who aren't fought for by the able. Those who can do something often do nothing and because of it there will always be suffering."
